Jay Si Proof is a musical collective playing earth jazz, founded in 2019 by trombonist/singer Jeff Chilton in Portland, OR. Playing between dancy grooves, catchy melodies, personal lyrics, and jazzy harmonies, Jay Si Proof's music strikes a balance between being thoughtfully arranged and passionately improvised. The band has been described as a cross between Steely Dan and Chick Corea fronted with vocals and horns.
Enlivened by his experience teaching music in the Portland Public Schools and vetted by years working as a cruise ship musician as well as a sideman in the diverse Portland music scene, Chilton is know for his charismatic and energetic live performances. He has performed with international bands such as The Diamonds, The Platters, and Broken Social Scene as well as countless PDX bands including Dirty Revival, Onion the Man, and the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble. He has played at venues such as Pickathon Music Festival, The Crystal Ballroom, The Wonder Ballroom, Doug Fir, Goodfoot Lounge, Grassroots Music Festival and more.
Joining him in Jay Si Proof, on stage and in the studio, is a rotating cast of musicians anchored by Keith Cheek (flute, tenor sax), JD Erikson (tenor sax), Lucas James (drums), Corey Heppner (guitar), Levi Zalma (bass), Jackie Yerke (vocals), and Bryanne Sawyers (vocals), all members of the vibrant and diverse Portland music scene. The collective is set to release their debut EP "Colloquy" Nov. 2020 and a follow up titled "Closer" in early 2021.
Jay Si Proof is a band with an intention. "We believe that when you listen, dance, or play music you are participating in whole being therapy which brings your body and mind into harmonic balance. We create new decade sounds rooted in funk, disco, jazz, afrobeat, and lofi hip hop traditions that are crafted and performed with purpose to elevate us all into a refreshing higher state. The proof is in the music!"
"This group is super versatile! From the Scofield-esk guitar solo to the searing sound of Jeff Chilton’s trombone, [Jay Si Proof] goes beyond while maintaining roots in the language of jazz."
